218 Chair
GebrĂĽder Thonet, 1876

The 218 chair is one of the best-selling models in Thonet's history. Delivered unassembled (a one cubic metre shipping crate could hold 36 chairs), it was a great export success, particularly in South America, where it furnished many cafés and restaurants.

Formerly known as chair n°18, it was renamed 218 when production resumed at Frankenberg.

GebrĂĽder Thonet

GebrĂĽder Thonet

Michael Thonet's sons, Franz, Michael junior, August, Josef and Jakob, joined the GebrĂĽder Thonet company in Vienna in 1853. After Michael Thonet's death in 1871, they ran the company together. They developed new machines and work processes and introduced many new developments and furniture designs. At the turn of the century, the third Thonet generation became active in the company: Karl, Julius, Theodor, Alfred, Victor and Richard also designed a wide range of new furniture and products in the course of their activities.
