The MR01 Initial chair, by the young designer Mathias Steen Rasmussen, combines a modern and refined style with traditional cabinetmaking techniques. Initially developed for the practice of meditation at home, it is entirely made of natural materials. With a seat and a backrest made of rope allowing air and light circulation, with its gentle seat inclination that extends to the chair leg and therefore to the floor, the MR01 Initial chair brings a connection to the elements and a remarkable flexibility. For more comfort in many sitting positions and in all seasons, a bouclé-covered pillow is included.
Jacob Gubi, Owner and Creative Director of Gubi: “This collaboration is the latest example of GUBI’s commitment to investing in craft and paving the way for new designers. Mathias’ prototypes immediately captured my attention. I was hugely impressed with the high level of execution and aesthetics from such a young and untested designer. He has a rare knowledge of wood and natural materials and it was a privilege to work with him to put his first piece into production.”
The frame, in solid oak or walnut, is built without a single screw using craft techniques such as finger or tenon-mortise joints. The direction of the wood grain is respected in order to optimize its resistance and to emphasize the open triangle geometry of the structure. The seat and backrest are hand-woven from 90 meters of rope, using a special method developed by the designer to lock the rope into the frame. The rope has an anti-deformation semi-elastic core, and can be replaced or rewoven, if necessary over time. The wood acquires a pleasant patina as it ages. Simplicity and longevity are the key words of this quite exceptional piece of work.

The MR01 Initial chair is made in Italy, its frame is made of solid wood FSC certified. FSC certification (Forest Stewardship Council - an international non-profit association created in 1993) is an independent label guaranteeing that forests are managed in a responsible and sustainable manner. In addition, four of the five crossbars used for the construction of the initial MR01 chair are identical, which simplifies construction and reduces waste.
Mathias Steen Rasmussen is part of the new generation of Danish designers who intend to put technique and craftsmanship back at the heart of the artistic creation process.
He began his studies at the Jutland Art Academy in 2012 in search of a way to express himself aesthetically and quickly realized his passion for working with wood and creating functional objects. He then turned to furniture design, and pursued a cabinetmaking training which he completed as an apprenticeship in 2019 with the highest distinctions.
His working philosophy is "honesty in construction". With the idea that the manufacturing process of an object must remain visible in its final design, Mathias Rasmussen seeks to highlight the naked grain of the wood and the joints between the different parts.
