Making the best available to the greatest number of people,” is how Charles and Ray Eames described one of their primary goals as furniture designers. Among their creations, no other has allowed them to come as close to this ideal as the Plastic Chairs. The idea of creating a single-piece seat shell, adapted to human anatomy, preoccupied the designer couple for many years. After unsatisfactory results from experiments with plywood and sheet aluminum in the 1940s, they discovered fiberglass-reinforced polyester resin during their search for alternative materials.
The Eames couple recognized and fully exploited the advantages of this material: malleability, solidity, pleasant touch and suitability for industrial processing. This material, completely unknown at the time in the furniture industry, made it possible to develop shells and perfect them until mass production. After their first presentation in the “Low cost furniture design” competition organized by the Museum of Modern Art in 1948, the Plastic Armchair (A shell) and the Plastic Side Chair (S shell) were launched on the market in 1950, as first mass-produced plastic seats.
NEW THIS SPRING - RE like in REcycled.
For every delivery starting this beginning of 2024, the shells of all Eames Plastic Chairs will be produced in recycled, post-consumer materials.
Due to the composition of the recycled material, the colors of the seat shells are dotted with tiny pigment dots.
The Eames Plastic Chairs also introduced a new typology of furniture which has since become widely used: the multi-functional seat whose shell can be combined with a variety of different bases to meet various purposes. As early as 1950, Charles and Ray Eames presented a series of bases dedicated to different sitting positions.
DSX, DSR, DSW (…) Chinese? Not at all!
You surely already heard these strange names - DSX, DSR, DSW (…) DAR, (…), RAR…,
to name the various members of the wide family of Eames chairs ?
Incryptable ? Not at all!
DS - abbreviation for Dining Sidechair
DA - abbreviation for Dining Armchair
RA - abbreviation for Rocking Armchair
And to this you add the abbreviation for the type of legs you choose:
The X leg - visualizing the x of the metal tubes - DSX, DAX…
The R leg - the « Eiffel » metallic leg - DSR, DAR, RAR
The W leg - W like in Wood - DSW, DAW…
Over the years and in constant consultation with the Eames family, Vitra has introduced more sustainable materials for the seat shells of the Eames Shell Chairs. From 2024, the shells of the Eames Plastic Chairs are made from recycled plastic and the chair family is now called Eames Plastic Chair RE.
The high-quality recycled materials come from the recycling of household materials, especially used packaging, obtained as part of the “yellow bag” (Gelber Sack) collection program in Germany. The use of this raw material in place of primary petroleum-based plastics means a reduction in climate-damaging emissions, going hand in hand with a significant drop in primary energy consumption.
How about the colours ?
Due to the composition of the recycled material, the different colors have tiny pigment spots. The “white” color has been replaced by cotton white RE, but the original white polypropylene version is expected to remain available until December 2024.
The other colors remain the same - except for two colors:
Sunlight Yellow gives way to Lemon Yellow.
And the Green, becomes Emerald Green.

Eames Special Collection
With the Eames Special Collection 2023, Vitra produced a limited edition of a certain number of pieces by Charles and Ray Eames .
The Eames Elephant in dark green stained ash, the Eames Wool Blanket in burgundy, Plywood Mobiles in burgundy/pale pink - and the Eames House Bird in two versions : dark green or pale pink.
We will have some last ones left of each !

Eames House Bird in pine green or pale pink - are part of the Eames Special Collection 2023 and available only until end of January 2024. They are a nice addition to the two classical versions - black lacquered or walnut.
The « Dot Pattern », created in 1947 for the exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art de New York, combines graphical patterns of dots and crosses in a generous composition, with reference to the abstract paintings Ray Eames made starting in the 1930s.
The Eames Wool Blanket, in 100 % merino wool, uses the pattern. Winter 2023/2024 - un beautiful burgundy in a limited edition.
In 1945, Charles & Ray Eames created an elephant toy in wood - pieces that was never produced in series. A prototype was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art à New York in 1946 and still remains in the Eames family’s archives. After a first limited edition in 2007, Vitra now produced the wooden Eames Elephant since 2018.

The shapes of the Plywood Mobiles, a strong reminder of Ray’s drawings and paintings, were displayed in the Eames’ apparemment in Los Angeles.
