Eclipse lamp

Lampes Eclipse Mauricio Klabin

The Eclipse lamp is one of those rare examples of a recent creation that immediately became a design icon. As soon as it came onto the market in 2006, it entered the permanent collection of New York's MoMa. Where does this success come from? Difficult to summarize, but the simplicity and ingenuity of the Eclipse lamp are astonishing, as is the possibility of modifying its shape and inclination.

"I believe that a designer's work should be of good quality, beautiful and inexpensive. With the Eclipse lamp, I've overcome the trauma of expensive design. I need popular objects to exist." Mauricio Klabin.

Mauricio Klabin

Designer, photographer and mechanical engineer (1952-2000) - Rio de Janeiro - Brazil

One of Mauricio Klabin's main preoccupations was to inspire a feeling of well-being and protection, or more precisely, to give us the sensation of being held in someone's arms...

His work is characterized by the absence of salient angles, complex requirements or complicated instructions for use. His projects are both simple and straightforward.

But more than that, he chooses to create objects that contain and cocoon. The Eclipse lamp is a telling example of his approach to design. Mauricio Klabin has also fought to impose the idea that design should be accessible to all. Commenting on this lamp, he said: "I believe that a designer's creation should be of good quality, beautiful and inexpensive. With the Eclipse lamp, I overcame the trauma of expensive design. This lamp had been ready for many years before I mass-produced it. I had the idea, but I didn't want to launch it until it was possible to mass-produce it at low cost. Design has to be accessible to the vast majority of us. I don't think it's right or even appropriate to create objects for only half a dozen people. I need popular objects to exist".
