Peanut Pendant
Bent Karlby, 1946

The Peanut lamp is a classic designed by Bent Karlby in 1946, at a time when fluorescent lighting was gaining popularity in society. But, like many of his contemporaries, Karlby had a deep distaste for this harsh, cold lighting. To soften and warm it, he designed this curved shade of three-layered hand-blown opal glass, complete with two brass end caps. As a result, the Peanut Suspension gives off a soft, warm light no matter where you look.

Bent Karby

Bent Karlby is widely regarded today as one of the most productive and versatile Danish lighting designers of the 20th century. He began collaborating with LYFA in the 1940s, a partnership that would last for nearly forty years. Bent Karlby is known for his soft light, organic shapes and distinctive peepholes. Over the course of his career, Karlby gravitated toward pure geometric shapes such as the cone, cylinder and arc, as well as playful colors. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Bent Karlby never employed staff in his studio. He wanted things done his way and was known for his uncompromising work ethic. His most famous works include the PEANUT, China, Japan, MOSAIK, NINOTCHKA, Barcelona and PAN pendants, the ERGO table lamp and the Peacock, Quadrille, PAN and GOTHIC sconces.
