Gothic Wall lamp Bent Karlby, 1970

Gothic Wall lamp
Bent Karlby, 1970

The Gothic lamp is a Karlby reference to the Gothic architectural style that flourished throughout Europe from the 12th to the 16th century, which was characterized by its tall, narrow structures connected by pointed arches. The fixture is made of premium solid brass. It emits a soft upward light that leaves a beautiful pattern on the wall, while the brushed surfaces are subtly lit through the narrow peepholes.

Bent Karby

Bent Karlby is widely regarded today as one of the most productive and versatile Danish lighting designers of the 20th century. He began collaborating with LYFA in the 1940s, a partnership that would last for nearly forty years. Bent Karlby is known for his soft light, organic shapes and distinctive peepholes. Over the course of his career, Karlby gravitated toward pure geometric shapes such as the cone, cylinder and arc, as well as playful colors. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Bent Karlby never employed staff in his studio. He wanted things done his way and was known for his uncompromising work ethic. His most famous works include the PEANUT, China, Japan, MOSAIK, NINOTCHKA, Barcelona and PAN pendants, the ERGO table lamp and the Peacock, Quadrille, PAN and GOTHIC sconces.
