1967 & 1972 Pendants

1967 & 1972 Pendants Paavo Tynell
1967 & 1972 Pendants Paavo Tynell

Paavo Tynell's family of classic suspensions was developed in several variations over the course of the 1950s. Each variant is a masterpiece of craftsmanship, with subtle but highly intricate and difficult details, including hand-punched brass perforations and hand-sewn bamboo strips.

Tynell's original pendant lamp, produced until 1972, featured a shade made of Finnish aspen slats. This shade was replaced by bamboo, a material with the same visual qualities, durability and flexibility as aspen, but which grows rapidly and is therefore more rapidly renewable. As with the 9205 and 9602 lamps, the bamboo strips are hand-sewn into a pleated mat and hand-attached to the metal frame, with a linen lining in between.

In addition to the 1972 bamboo suspension, Gubi has also reissued the classic 1967 canvas suspension. The natural materials of the two shades direct most of the light downwards, creating a diffused glow around the shade and upwards.

The Ø60cm versions (A1967 and A1972) are also available with an optional brass counterweight, which allows the user to easily adjust the height of the lamp using a pulley system. The counterweight is made from a single block of milled brass.

In both styles, a central core holds the shade in place, with a polished brass canopy at the top of the wire, connecting the lamp to the ceiling. Beneath the bulb, a fabric diffuser modulates the light, and underneath, a decorative brass detail gives character to each lamp and subtly influences the play of light it generates.

Paavo Tynell (1890-1973) was a Finnish industrial designer specializing in lighting design. Paavo Tynell began his career in Helsinki at the beginning of the 20th century in a Finnish metal art forge company, Tynell qualified as a master craftsman in 1913. At the same time, he studied at Taideteollisuus Keskuskoulu (today the Helsinki University of industrial arts), where he eventually worked as a teacher.

In 1918, Paavo Tynell founded his own company Oy Taito Ab with Gösta Serlachius, Emil Wickström, Eric Ehrström and Frans Nykänen. Taito Oy began to focus more on lamps during the 1930s, with Paavo Tynell as chief designer and CEO.

In 1953, the majority of Oy Taito Ab was purchased by another Finnish lighting company, Idman Oy.Tynell continued to draw regularly for Idman until the early 1960s and the company continued to produce the most popular lamp ever designed by Tynell, a square-shaped "starry sky" ceiling lamp, until the late 1970s. Paavo Tynell lived permanently in Tuusula, Finland, where he eventually died in 1973.
