Pieni Unikko and Alku collection
Marimekko fabrics

The rich collection of Marimekko fabrics is constantly evolving: in addition to the continuous collection presented below, which is itself partially renewed from year to year, there are seasonal collections, produced in smaller quantities and available for a shorter time.

The entire collection blends historic designs from the 1950s to the present day, often in new colors, with new creations by contemporary talents.

Marimekko fabrics can be used to make curtains, tablecloths, cushions and more. On this page you'll find a Marimekko fabrics user guide.

You'll also find some ready-to-use Marimekko curtains on this page.

All interior textiles are printed in Marimekko's carbon-neutral factory.

How to use marimekko fabrics?

Marimekko Fabrics

The Marimekko fabric collection includes a variety of classic and seasonal prints and materials such as cotton, coated cotton, satin, linen and batiste. You can order fabrics from our online shop just like any other product.
Choose the fabric you like, its colour and length in decimetres or number of repeats, and add it to your basket. Your basket will show you the final price and quantity of the fabric.

Marimekko Fabrics

Fabrics printed in Helsinki

Marimekko fabrics are printed using either a flat printing method or a rotary printing method.
Printing large fabrics using the flatbed printing method leaves a repeat line at the edge of the design, the size of which depends on the colour and design of the fabric. The repeat line is not a defect but a feature of the printing technique that can also be used as an effect.

The majority of the fabrics printed in Marimekko's Herttoniemi printing plant are certified by
OEKOTEX® to STANDARD 100. This certificate guarantees that the fabrics are free of harmful chemicals.
Marimekko coated cottons were previously coated with phthalate-free PVC and as of 2019 this technique has been replaced by acrylic coating.

Check the fabric's product page to see if it is sold by the decimetre or by the repeat. Fabrics with large patterns are sometimes sold by the repeat, while those with small patterns are sold by the decimetre.
The minimum order is one decimetre.

Marimekko fabrics are 145 to 150 cm wide. The length of the repeat pattern is mentioned in the fabric specifications. The repeats are +/- 3% of what is specified.
Please note that the maximum continuous length you can order is 15 metres (150 decimetres).

The amount of fabric you order can be delivered in one continuous length or in several cuts on request. The tone of Marimekko fabrics may vary from one printing batch to another. There may be slight differences between the tone of the photo on the product page and the actual fabric.

Marimekko fabric samples

Please note that the fabrics are cut to order and therefore cannot be returned.

To help you better visualise the material, transparency, colours, etc., we invite you to order one or more 10 cm wide samples. Please note that, depending on its repetition, the complete pattern and/or all the colours will not always be visible on the sample ordered.

How much fabric do you need?

It is advisable to plan your sewing carefully before ordering fabric, to ensure that you buy the right amount. When calculating the amount of fabric required, be sure to take into account the excess required for hems and print alignment.

For pattern alignment, use the repeat measurement (shown in the specifications) as a guide.
Please also take into account possible shrinkage when planning your seam (cotton, satin and batiste: 4%; linen: 6%).

Buy fabric for a cushion cover

Marimekko Fabrics

1. Decide on the size of the cushion you would like to have.

Examples of common sizes are 40 x 40 cm and 50 x 50 cm.
If you are making a new cover for an old cushion, measure your cushion.

2. How much fabric do I need?

If the width of the cushion is 50 cm or less: height + 10 cm for seam allowance = what you need to order.

For example, for a 40 x 40 cm cushion, buy the height + 10 cm for the seam allowance: 40 x 40 cm cushion - buy at least 5 decimetres of fabric (40 cm + 10 cm).

If the width of the cushion is greater than 50 cm: width + height + 10 cm for seam allowance = what to order.

For example: 70 x 70 cm cushion - buy at least 1.5 m of fabric (70 cm + 70 cm + 10 cm).

The width of the fabrics is 145-150 cm and the maximum continuous length is 150 decimetres (15 m).

Buy fabric for a tablecloth

Marimekko Fabrics

1. Measure your table.

Measure the table and determine the length of fabric that should extend beyond the edge of the table (a length of about 25 cm on each side is normally recommended).

2. How much fabric do I need?

Length of table + length of drop (total) + 15 cm for the hem = what you need to order.

For example, for a 3 m long table, you should not buy less fabric than 3.65 m of fabric (3 m + 25 cm + 25 cm + 15 cm),
or 37 decimetres.

The width of the fabrics is 145-150 cm and the maximum continuous length is 150 decimetres (15 m).

Buy fabric for a curtain

Marimekko Fabrics

1. Select the type of curtain and take the measurements.

A - Ceiling
B - Sill length curtain
C - Floor height curtain

2. Decide how you want to hang your curtain.

Clips or hooks: Amount of extra fabric needed for the hem: 25 cm.
Pocket for rod: Extra fabric needed for hem: 30 cm.

3. How much fabric is needed for a curtain?

The length of the curtain measured from the top of the rod to the bottom of the curtain + 25/30 cm for the hem = you need to order.

For example: 250 cm long pocket curtain - buy no less than 2.8 m of fabric (250 cm + 30 cm).

The width of the fabrics is 145-150 cm and the maximum continuous length is 150 decimetres (15 m).
