The Scandia cutlery collection, designed by legendary Finnish designer Kaj Franck for Iittala in 1952, is an emblematic incarnation of Scandinavian design, where simplicity, functionality and timeless elegance meet. Created at a time when Finland was seeking to assert its modernist identity after the Second World War, Scandia reflects Franck's philosophy: everyday objects should be practical, accessible and aesthetically pleasing, without superfluous ornamentation. This collection, still produced today, remains a symbol of Iittala's heritage and the genius of Franck, often referred to as the “father of Finnish design”.

Scandia cutlery is distinguished by its clean lines and geometric design, which emphasize functionality while offering discreet elegance. Slightly flattened handles with rounded edges ensure a comfortable, intuitive grip, while their rectangular shape contrasts with the gentle curves of the functional parts (blades, tines, spoons). This combination creates a visual and tactile balance, making the cutlery both modern and timeless.

One of Scandia's distinguishing features is its universal simplicity. Unlike the more ornate flatware of the time, Scandia avoids all decorative detail, emphasizing purity of line and quality of materials. This sobriety enables the collection to harmonize with a wide variety of dinnerware, including Franck's iconic Teema and Kartio creations, but also with more contemporary or classic styles.

Designer

Kaj Franck (1911-1989) is known as the “conscience of Finnish design”. Kaj Franck grew up in a world of elaborate catering services and few stone dishes. In the course of his important career, Kaj Franck asserted himself between the two extremes and profoundly changed our understanding of tableware.

He has used mass production to produce versatile, practical tableware at a reasonable price. In addition to social awareness, Kaj Franck's distinctive career was guided by a desire to seek the essential. He studied endless basic forms with a particular emphasis on proportions.

Kaj Franck was a professor at the Helsinki School of Art and Design. His work won him international recognition and numerous awards, including Finland's most prestigious design prize, its namesake. Generations of Iittala consumers have purchased Kaj Franck's successful Teema and Kartio series, making these classic household items the classic Kaj Franck legacy.
