Now, more than seventy years later, this refined and expressive design enters the Fritz Hansen collection for the first time, adding a new chapter to Kjærholm’s legacy.

The PK3 is a four-legged stackable chair made of laminated wood veneer and steel, encapsulating Kjærholm's rare ability to infuse a complex structure with grace. With its geometric balance and clear lines, it evokes the era of its creation without aging. This chair reflects a key moment in Kjærholm's youth, when he was exploring soft materials and technical rigor. While many of his contemporaries favored wood, Kjærholm considered steel as his creative medium not only for its strength, but also for its ability to capture light.

Showcasing Kjærholm's signature blend of industrial precision and organic simplicity, the PK3 is crafted with the same attention to detail that has defined Fritz Hansen's relationship with Kjærholm since 1982. The seat and backrest are formed from two laminated veneer shells, joined by discreet aluminum fasteners, and set on a tubular steel base supported by rubber buffers.

“Seeing the PK3 come to life has profound meaning. It completes an idea begun decades ago – and reveals how much my father’s work still has to offer,” says Thomas Kjærholm of his father’s long-forgotten design. With its minimal footprint and robust construction, the PK3 is an understated chair designed for interiors, galleries, institutions, and public spaces. It is both a rediscovery and a forward-looking proposition. It demonstrates Fritz Hansen’s commitment to keeping Kjærholm’s legacy alive.
