The new Grace Outdoor armchair marks another step in GUBI's mission to honor and elevate Danish architect and designer Tove Kindt-Larsen's contribution to 20th century design.
Building on the popularity of the Grace rattan armchair, which GUBI developed in 2022 from a sketch Kindt-Larsen made almost a century earlier, in 1936, this new edition takes her iconic design into new territory: the outdoors.
Loved for its gentle curves, the organic materiality of its rattan form and the comfort offered by its deep cushion, the Grace armchair has an inherent affinity with outdoor spaces such as solariums and orangeries.
Now, with the introduction of Grace Outdoor, this extraordinary sculptural design is completely reimagined for outdoor living.
Crafted from state-of-the-art materials designed to withstand the elements, it retains the casual elegance that has made Grace a timeless favorite, while expanding the design's versatility to embrace the outdoors.
Reflecting the artisanal expression of the indoor version, the outdoor edition replaces rattan with a sophisticated synthetic equivalent.
Made from powder-coated aluminum tubes and polyethylene fibers, this material offers the same flexibility as rattan, while reinforcing structure and improving stability.
Its enhanced weather and UV resistance makes Grace a durable and elegant element of outdoor spaces such as patios, balconies and terraces.
The deep, generously padded seat is filled with soft foam and includes a specially developed membrane that is both water-resistant and breathable to allow rapid drying if it rains on the chair.
The seat is covered with an outdoor fabric, designed to withstand the elements while preserving the exceptional level of comfort for which the Grace chaise longue is renowned.
Tove is best known for her work with her husband, Edvard Kindt-Larsen (1901-1982), and for the couple's overall impact on the mid-century Danish design movement, but her own influence should not be underestimated.
She was a pioneer of rattan chairs and was already renowned for her award-winning wicker furniture by the time they met.
Trained as an architect, she also studied furniture design at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, under the “godfather of Danish design” Kaare Klint, before founding a joint studio with Edvard in 1945.
The duo went on to become designers and curators.
Copenhagen Carpenters' Guild exhibitions for 23 years, creating new furniture typologies as functional solutions to the everyday problems of every living room.
