The A330S pendant light was originally designed for the Savoy restaurant in Helsinki, a project for which Aalto and his wife Aino were commissioned to design the interior in 1936. This light, which reflects Aalto's modernist and organic aesthetic, has become a design classic, appreciated for its timeless elegance and functionality.
Made from a single piece of metal – generally brass or steel depending on the finish – the A330S pendant lamp is distinguished by its sleek bell shape and delicate perforations on the lower edge. These openings are not just decorative: they diffuse a soft, warm light, while creating a halo effect that reduces glare. This attention to the quality of light reflects the philosophy of Aalto, who sought to humanise design by making it both practical and pleasant.
The ‘Golden Bell’ is available in several finishes, such as polished brass (which develops a natural patina over time), chrome steel, or even versions painted black or white. With its compact dimensions (approximately 20 cm in height and 17 cm in diameter), it fits perfectly in various spaces, including dining rooms, living rooms or kitchens. Its cable, often 2.5 metres long, offers great installation flexibility.
Displayed in the Finnish pavilion at the 1937 World's Fair in Paris, the A330S quickly gained popularity and remains a symbol of Scandinavian design today. It embodies Aalto's approach, which combines formal simplicity, quality materials and a particular sensitivity to the human experience. More than just an object, it is a piece that tells a story of creativity and innovation, still produced by Artek, the company co-founded by Aalto in 1935.
