Design and characteristics

The A110 pendant lamp consists of two lacquered steel cylinders, one nested inside the other, topped by a 2.5-metre cable. It is available in two main finishes: black or white, with a perforated polished brass collar or painted in the same colour as the lampshade. The brass ring at the base is a refined detail that diffuses the light downwards while creating a halo effect, thus reducing glare. The lamp projects both direct downward and indirect upward light, creating a warm and functional ambience.

With its compact dimensions (16 cm in diameter and 44 cm in height), the A110 is both discreet and striking. Its industrial and refined design contrasts with the organic forms often associated with Aalto, but reflects his approach to functionalism: simple, practical objects in harmony with people.

Origin and use

Alvar Aalto originally created this lamp for the Finnish Engineers' Association building in Helsinki, which he designed between 1948 and 1953. It was also used in the council chamber of Säynätsalo Town Hall (1949-1952), another of the architect's notable achievements. Today, it is popular in contemporary interiors, particularly in kitchens or above a worktop, where it can be installed alone or in series for a harmonious visual effect.

Heritage

The A110 embodies the humanist approach of Aalto, who sought to soften artificial light and integrate his creations into everyday life in a natural way. Although he is best known for his bentwood furniture or his Savoy vase, this pendant lamp illustrates his versatility and talent for combining art, design and technology - Artek's core values.

The timeless A110 pendant light remains an icon of Scandinavian design, appreciated for its ability to combine aesthetics and utility with understated elegance.
