Scarpa sideboard – Wewood

Wewood's Scarpa is an iconic sideboard that perfectly illustrates the Portuguese brand's approach: a marriage of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design. Designed by the Wewood Design Center, a team of talented designers including Salvados Gonzaga Silva, Gonçalo Campos, Rafaela Carvalho and Liliana Ferreira, this sideboard stands out for its refined aesthetic and well-thought-out functionality.

Design and features
The Scarpa is a rectangular sideboard with generous dimensions: 186 cm long, 45 cm deep and 84 cm high, with a weight of around 93.5 kg (may vary according to materials or finishes). It is made of 100% solid wood, available in oak or walnut, both of which enhance the natural beauty of the material. The structure, legs, doors and even the interior drawers are made from the same wood, ensuring visual consistency and exceptional durability.

What makes the Scarpa unique is the craftsmanship of its sliding doors. Wewood craftsmen hand-assemble pieces of wood to create a three-dimensional relief pattern, playing on contrasts of light and shadow. In some versions, one of the doors combines walnut and oak to accentuate this graphic effect, while the other remains solid walnut, adding a touch of sophistication. This design, often described as “almost futuristic” despite its traditional roots, is inspired by the clean lines of Scandinavian style, making it equally at home in classic and contemporary interiors.

Inside, the Scarpa offers practical organization: two drawers and four large compartments separated by adjustable shelves, ideal for storing a variety of items, whether crockery, books or electronics. It can even be used as a multimedia cabinet, with the option of having openings drilled in the back to run cables, on request when ordering.

Manufacturing and philosophy
Handcrafted in Portugal, Scarpa is a pure product of traditional joinery and marquetry techniques. Wewood, successor to Móveis Carlos Alfredo (founded in 1964), makes a point of using certified, sustainable materials, such as wood from ecologically managed forests (FSC). Each piece is produced in a limited series, numbered and signed by the brand and the designer, making it an almost unique object. The finish, often based on natural linseed oil, protects the wood while giving it a satin texture that is easy to maintain and repair, extending the life of the piece.

Use and versatility
The Scarpa is designed for versatility. In the living room, it can be used as a sideboard or TV stand. In an entrance hall, it becomes an elegant reception piece. Its timeless silhouette and clean lines make it suitable for a variety of environments, whether a contemporary home or a professional space such as an office or hotel lobby. Sliding doors are a practical asset, allowing wide opening without crowding the space, which is particularly appreciated in smaller rooms.

Impact and reception
The Scarpa is a masterpiece that combines functionality and aesthetics. Its design, at once classic and bold with its three-dimensional relief, makes it a “feast for the eye”. It embodies Wewood's values of quality materials, durable construction and timeless design, with the ambition of creating furniture that is handed down from generation to generation. In short, Wewood's Scarpa is an exceptional piece of furniture that celebrates the heritage of Portuguese cabinetmaking while embracing elegant modernity.
