Mathieu Gustafsson has his roots both in Paris and in the Swedish province of Småland – the heart of the Swedish furniture industry. It is from differences and similarities between the two cultures that Mathieu takes much of his inspiration. His creative process often starts with becoming aware of a need or a way of behaving, rather than with an object.
Professionally, Mathieu has a background in graphic design, furniture making and furniture design. He currently runs a design studio at leading Swedish architectural practice Tengbom, focusing on furniture and industrial design. He is also creative director for furniture manufacturer Grand.
The Air collection combines a graphic pattern with natural cane inlays that gives a feeling of lightness and transparency. Air can be used as an independent room divider or placed against a wall.
For 2019, the Air collection has been expanded with a low sideboard ideal as a TV stand, perfect in the dining room or living room.
The woven cane gives it an interesting surface, but also an impression of depth. You can guess what it contains, which adds a touch of mystery to the piece. The fact that the design is transparent also fulfills a function. The woven cane vents the closet, convenient for storing clothes and electronics.
