The Sten shelf adds a sculptural design to Normann Copenhagen's collection of storage solutions. As its name suggests, Sten, which means "stone" in Danish, is a decorative shelf made entirely of stone. Sten is distinguished by its simplicity: a single slab of stone rests on two rounded uprights, also made of stone.
Designer Simon Legald explains: "Usually, a shelf is made up of several uprights and a shelf. Here, I wanted to create a single unit where the uprights play an aesthetic role, rather than just being functional. The stone is both functional and sculptural, adding an artistic touch to your walls while providing storage for books, vases or decorative objects.
The Sten shelf comes in two lengths, 80 and 120 cm, and is available in sophisticated black marble, classic white marble and elegant travertine. As a natural material, each shelf has its own unique pattern.

Simon Legald graduated from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in the summer of 2012. His work consists of both small- and large scale products. Simonβs designs are often created in a dialogue between craftsmanship and industry. He also likes to incorporate the techniques that are necessary for the structure of a product into the design by highlighting them visually.
βHonesty is what makes a product understandable and is what describes the products functionality. If you understand the product, it does not need any explanation. The essence of my design is for it to be bought and used. Therefore, it has to satisfy not only the functional aspects, but also the psychological and aesthetic needs. For me simplicity describes the true identity of objects and makes them trustworthy. In my design, I try not to add any unnecessary details. I work with simplicity by highlighting the necessities instead of hiding them. It gives the product a simple and honest expression.β
