Collection Valkea Yö

Printing large-print fabrics using the flatbed method gives huge possibilities for large patterns to come alive - which has always been one of Marimekko’s strenghts.

The technique is here used for Fuji Ishimoto’s classical pattern Valkea yö (white night) from 1982, 121cm in repeat, showing how the moon reveals stunning details of nature. It is also used in Maija Isola’s print Vuoren Kasvit (mountain plants) from 1979, 146cm in repeat.

The technique leaves a repeat line at the edge of the pattern (the prominence of this line depends on the fabric’s color and pattern). The repeat line is not a flaw but a feature of the printing technique that can also be used as an effect.
