Le motif Unikko (coquelicot) fut dessiné en 1964, juste après que la fondatrice de la marque Armi Ratia ait proclamé publiquement qu'elle bannissait les motifs floraux – qu'elle jugeait éculés – de ses collections. Nourrie par l'esprit de contradiction propre aux artistes, Maija Isola la défia en dessinant toute une série de motifs floraux dont le style était si novateur et frais qu'elle parvint à faire changer d'avis la pourtant très décidée Armi Ratia.
L'un de ces motifs était Unikko : ironie de l'histoire, il est devenu le motif le plus emblématique de Marimekko.
