Bernard-Albin Gras & The Gras Lamps

In 1921, Bernard-Albin Gras created a range of lamps for industry and design offices. The GRAS lamp is astonishing for its ergonomics and the simplicity of its mechanism - no screws, no welding - which makes it extremely robust. But Bernard-Albin Gras is also one of the first designers of the 20th century: not content with innovating, he adds an original functional aesthetic to his creations, particularly in the design of the bases and connecting rods.

Very quickly, Le Corbusier, seduced by the modernity of its design and its quality of use, adopted the GRAS lamp range and integrated it into his agency as well as into his numerous projects throughout the world.

The GRAS lamp then became a legend. Robert Mallet-Stevens, Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann, Eileen Gray, but also Sonia Delaunay, Georges Braque... It is the first time in the history of lighting that a lamp is used in workshops, houses and flats. Today, this lamp is collected by enthusiasts around the world, particularly in France, the United States and Japan. Bernard-Albin Gras' innate sense of aesthetics has stood the test of time.

Like many designs that have marked their time, the Gras lamp is the result of the technical ingenuity of an engineer, Bernard-Albin Gras, who created a collection of workshop lamps from 1921 onwards with a particularly ingenious system of articulation, without screws or welding, which made it particularly reliable and practical.

Endowed with a strong aesthetic sense, Bernard-Albin Gras knew how to enhance his invention with pure and functional lines, which seduced many designers such as Le Corbusier, Robert Mallet-Stevens, Jacques Ruhlmann, Eileen Gray, Sonia Delaunay and Georges Braque. This is how the Gras lamp was soon elevated to the rank of design object, present all over the world, whether in private interiors, painters' studios or architectural studios.

The Gras lamp has become unobtainable and collected in Europe, the United States and Japan. Since 2008, it has been carefully reissued by DCW Editions, the exclusive holders of the rights inherited from Bernard-Albin Gras.Â
