Semis by Kvadrat is the result of two years' work and intensive research by Parisian designers Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec. The knots in the carpet are arranged in different densities and heights. The result is an abstract landscape that resembles an aerial photograph of a cultivated field.
The distinct shape of the rug, a rectangle with cut corners, is emphasised by the pattern of the knots, which follow a regular grid in the centre and become more irregular at the ends.Semis rugs are time-consuming to produce, using a complex and remarkably strong Tibetan knotting technique. For a 200 cm wide carpet, three weavers work together in Nepal, weaving up to 7 cm a day. The carpet is then washed and evened out with scissors.
For the Bouroullecs brothers, it is these small variations - in the shape of the stitches, in the thickness of the material and in the fact that different weavers create a carpet - that give each Semis a unique and personal touch.
You can order a square, rectangular or round rug. The order unit is the square decimeter (10 x 10 cm). For example, if you want a rectangular rug measuring 120 x 130 cm, you'll need to order 12 x 13 = 156 units.
If you want a round rug, you need to order the equivalent of the square rug containing your round rug. For example, for a Ø120 cm rug, you'd need to order the equivalent of a 120 x 120 cm rug, i.e. 144 units.

Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec
Brother Ronan (b.1971) and Erwan (b.1976) Bouroullec grew up in Quimper, France. Then they went on to complete their educations at the École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and at the École des Beaux-Arts in Cergy-Pontoise, respectively. In 1999, they became joint partners in their own Paris-based design studio. Their work ranges from small utilitarian objects to architectural projects. In addition to the design of domestic and office furniture, vases, porcelain dishware, jewelry and diverse home accessories, a primary focus of their work is the design and organization of interior space.
Throughout their celebrated career, Studio Bouroullec has collaborated with renowned brands such as Vitra, Magis, Alessi, Samsung, Kvadrat and HAY. Their work has been exhibited throughout the world including the Design Museum (London), Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago & Los Angeles) and the Arts Décoratifs (Paris). Their Ruutu collection for Iittala showcases fluid, vibrant vases that have already been dubbed a ‘future classic.’
