Artek is a Finnish design company, manufacturer of furniture and lighting designed by Alvar Aalto, Ilmari Tapiovaara, the Bouroullec brothers, Enzo Mari, Jorn Utzon, Juha Leiviskäet and others. Artek has been created in 1935, by Alvar and Aino Aalto, Nils-Gustav Hahl and Maire Gullichsen, to promote a "culture of modern living" through a "sustainable, high quality furniture, using language and clean forms", based on a manifesto inspired by functionalism. From the beginning, Artek promote comfort and natural materials like leather, wood and hemp, at a time when metal and hard geometric lines dominated the modern furnishings (Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, Gerrit Rietveld, etc.). Today, the softness and comfort of Artek furnitures and lighting contribute to its strong revival.
In 2013, Vitra bought Artek. At this occasion, Daniel Sachs, Artek's chief executive, said: ‘Vitra has the ideal corporate culture, know-how and industrial resources to take Artek to the next level’
